Web design links for December 15th, 2007
Posted on Saturday, December 15th, 2007 under design inspiration, design resources, web design links, web design news, web standards by Dustin Brewer. The year is getting close to an end and it seems that in these last couple of weeks of the year only the most dedicated bloggers are taking time to write posts. Which is great for those that are looking for content, but difficult for those of us that want to be sure to get all of the great stories we have read throughout the week out to those looking for great design content. At any rate, I have compiled a pretty good list of content. Thanks for everyone’s submissions for this week also. Be sure to submit your submissions by the end of day Friday this next week, and only submissions for posts that happened between Monday-Friday will count. I got a lot this time dating before last weekend.
Top blog designs of 2007
First on my list is an inspirational post about 53 great blog designs of 2007 from adii. There are some fantastic blog designs on this site. Nearly every one of them makes me want to redesign, which I probably will soon (I can’t help it).
On web standards and progress
I also read a fantastic article from Andy Clarke about web standards and the push for the disbanding of the CSS working group. In relation to the recent news from Opera about filing suit in the European Union against Microsoft’s lack of support for web standards. The article talks about how the actual working group is made up of browser vendor representatives looking after their own interests rather then forward-thinking developers. Also, Jeffrey Zeldman of Happycog had a rebuttal to Andy Clarke’s article that is worth reading to see a separate view of the very touchy topic. Be sure to read the insightful comments on both posts, especially that of Jeff Croft on the latter article. Eric Meyer also had some great things to say on the topic. ¡Viva la Revolución de Web Standards!
Stop using cliché stock photography!
I found a great article on not using cliché stock photography in design, it is more of an amusing article then anything. The typical call center guy (or girl) for the company with less then 10 people working for it, etc. I also read a great article by Douglas Karr that was the exact letter we would like to send out to all of our abusive clients that assure us they know more then us, because they have been in the industry for half an hour now.
Create explosive and compelling content
I read another fantastic article from Vandelay website design about the perfect combination of Content, networking and social media for explosive blogging growth. Quite a mouth full but the article is full of fantastic information for beginning and seasoned bloggers. One of those must-read articles on blogging, content creation and social networking.
Web accessibility is your responsibility as a web worker
Roger from 456 Berea Street has a great post about accessibility being apart of every web design, programmer and developer’s job. The article is short but the conversation happening in the comments is brilliant.
Closing with some great design web applications
I don’t want this post to be too terrible long so I have to end the link fun here. I would to end with two great new web applications that I have come across. The first is commandshift3 which is like hot or not for web designs. A great little time killer and way to find awesome and not-so-awesome web sites. The other site I found interesting but haven’t had much time to play with is Designoogle which lets you use a custom Google search for finding design inspiration using adjectives, characteristics and colors. A great idea, with it being in alpha it isn’t perfected quite yet but with a few simple searches it turned up some pretty great results. I think an image-based search using thumbnails would be pretty beneficial also. We’ll see how it all turns out I suppose.
Update: I just read a really great article from Web Designer Wall on Typographic Contrast and flow. A fantastic article on typography in web design.

Thanks for the link Dustin.
I’ve seen your site pop-up many times on CommandShift3, it’s doing quite well
There’s some good links here, thanks.
I’ve tried to find my site in CommandShift3 but only been able to do it once and it took awhile. I was up against the Seattle times, which was hilarious.
I’ve actually seen your site more times then mine, which is amusing. Don’t worry, I voted for you. You appear to be doing pretty well also.
