Top 5 design podcasts for designers

These are the top design podcasts that i frequently watch/listen to throughout the week, they are all updated weekly and have a ton of useful information for the seasoned professional designer and for the new designers whether freelance designer or just starting an entry level design job. I wish I could separate these into the top 5 design video podcasts and top 5 design audio podcasts but unfortunately there just aren’t that many out there and a lot of the podcasts available just aren’t any good or updated enough to be worth your time or mine. Now on with the list…

Rookie Designer Adam Hay goes over everything about design that you need to know as a seasoned designer or just starting out in the field. The podcast is updated weekly every Wednesday almost always on time but always a reason why it won’t be if it is not. The podcast talks about everything from colors, freelance, interviews, technical design and customer service. Everything you want to know about the design field is talked about on his show.

.net magazine (formerly Practical Web Design) Paul Boag is the main voice on this podcast and has various big names in the industry (in the UK) come on the show and discuss various web design architectures and more technical aspects of web design in general. They cover a healthy array of things in the news with web design as well as talk about new trends in web design. A great podcast for those interested in the programming and business side of web design.

PhotoshopTV This one is a given and a helpful video podcast to watch for everyone interested in web or graphic design. This show is hosted by Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski and Dave Cross. Although they cover photography a lot more then some of the other design abilities of Photoshop it is always a great watch. I recently had the opportunity to listen to Dave Cross from the show at one of his recent NAPP Photoshop Power User tours and it was like getting an injection of PhotoshopTV.

Boagworld Paul Boag also does this podcast and goes over more specific areas of web design then are talked about on .net magazine. The podcast will cover anything from web design services and how to sell them to how to implement AJAX into your companies corporate web site without compromising usability.

Webaxe This is a great web design podcast that goes very in depth with web accessibility and the various aspects of that niche within the web design world. They also interview various figures within the web design world about themselves and their endeavors within the web design world

These are some of the awesome design podcasts that I listen to weekly, sometimes biweekly depending on how busy I am throughout the week. Most of the time these are easy to toss onto CD and listen to in my car while I drive to work or to a client’s home/office. Always inspirational and always insightful to get an idea of what other people are doing, saying or talking about.

I do of course wish that there were more options for graphic design podcasts or web design podcasts but I’m not dissatisfied with the quality of the podcasts available. I think that there is a good mix right now but I know there could be a better mix of design podcasts available if we could just talk those people into speaking for an hour every week about design.

    Hi Dustin.
Thanks for sharing. I just subscribed to Webaxe and looking forward to relaxing a little and listening for a while.
Heres one podcast i do like, it’s very tongue in cheek and not that technical. It’s the Rissington Podcast which is hosted by Jon Oxton and Jon Hicks. Heres the link:

Those guys are very busy so the podcast is quite intermittent rather than every week or fortnight. Hope you like it.
