Generating traffic, Part 1: Organic Marketing

This is part one of generating traffic to your web site through various marketing methods, this topic is of course about organic marketing. Organic marketing is basically word of mouth and being able to generate interest in your service/ product/ web site through bringing it up on topic with people in person and in online communities. If done right you can generate more quality traffic then almost any other method. We will start with the best method to get your web site out there, it is the top thing to do and the best way to get traffic to your web site or purchases of your products. The best way to get your web site out there is word of mouth. It’s your job to talk about your web site with everyone you know, try to avoid being annoying of course but talk about it.

Try to mention new features that may interest whoever you are speaking to, don’t try to sell them your web site just bring it up in casual conversation and generate that interest in whatever it is your web site offers. Once you generate interest in the site with your friends and family they will refer other people that are interested in the topic and so on. This rudimentary rule of course only applies to people you discuss it with that are interested in the topic/ products/ services. Don’t expect to be talking to your doctor about your heavy metal web site and expect him to care.

That is of course known as organic marketing and it will generate some of the most quality traffic that you can possibly get for your web site. This method could easily be your only source of generating traffic as long as it is done right and with class. Just like in most other things, networking is the key. Which leads me into the next method in which you can generate traffic to your web site. Sign up for forums, blogs and newsgroups that interest you and have discussions with people in there and generally enjoy the topic that you should already be interested in.

You can casually link to your web site every now and again as long as it is on topic, don’t be a spammer of course. You will ruin your reputation very quickly by just spam linking to your own web site. Be sure that when you include it in a post that it is on topic. I’m not condoning forum/blog spamming by any means, that is garbage and isn’t why you should be doing a web site. Once you link to your site you are generating more quality traffic the same way if you were to do it in person this way. Not only will the people in the conversation be interested but all those people that don’t have a login and are just reading the forums will investigate it further. Keep in mind again, signing up for a medical insurance forum to talk about your technology news web site doesn’t make any sense.

These are all organic marketing methods and you have to exercise extreme care when doing this in order to avoid being spammy/annoying. As long as you stay on topic or are able to generate the topic to be on cue with your web site theme then it is alright to talk about it. With being able to associate a name with the web site people will generally be much more willing to offer your web site to other people that they discuss the topic of your site with. It all comes down to being memorable but not bothersome.
