Working on the new design, bear with me

I’m working on finishing up the new design. I know there are quite a few little things here and there that I’m trying to work out. But overall the site should be working pretty great, cross-browser. I’m just having some interesting problems with Wordpress.

Definitely let me know what you think of the site, one of the major items I’m going to be fixing is getting the blog working exactly how I want it to work. Right now it is outputting fulltext because Wordpress hates me. I’ll fix that very soon, somehow.

New website design is coming soon, and some updates

I’ve been working on a new design for the site over the past few days to position my freelance web design focus. The blog will still be a very integral part of the site and it will even come with new, and hopefully interesting posts on all aspects of web design. I will probably put a lot of focus on the freelance end of things as well as some case studies I have had with a few of my clients to help the up and coming freelancers better understand the processes that I go through.

I don’t have a tentative launch date yet, I’m being picky about the detail as always. I thought I would throw up a sneak peak of the new design in its early stages of development.

Also, on a side note. If you are a freelance web designer in the Oklahoma City area there is a office collaborative being put together by Derrick Parkhurst, Derek Hubbard and Chad Henderson called OKC CoCo. There is an open house at the space on January 17th, a Saturday, at 2PM if you are interested in hearing more about it.

New site design is here, leave lots of positive comments

I have finally published my new site design, it is somewhat similar in layout to the old design but it has quite a bit more details to it. It is also much cleaner than the last design when it comes to over all look and feel. I’ve pushed some typographic styles on to the site to increase the readability of the whole site as well.

Site updates, new content and the future

I have been busy working on projects outside of the blog lately and had to set several things on the side burner. I have created a new design for this site which is about half way styled out and should be a huge improvement once it is implemented into Wordpress. It may take a little focus away from the blog and focus a little more on my freelance web design here in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and elsewhere. However, the blog will still be the primary focus of this site.

I’m also working on developing out articles for when the new version of the site launches. I know content has been lacking recently but I have some great stuff coming out soon. I’m also working on a few projects that I may be releasing before too long. Similar to designer text, my lorem ipsum generator for designers. Which is still in beta, and I plan to never put advertisements on it— unlike many of the other solutions available. I’ll also be implementing a very customizable generator to the site soon.

At any rate, keep your dial tuned to this site. As I have said before, you can follow me on Twitter to stay up-to-date on everything.

Upgraded to wordpress 2.5

Just upgraded to the newest version of wordpress, the admin is a much better than before. The options are much more intuitive and seems to give you more flexibility also. Happy Cog did a great job on the design and the wordpress community including Automattic, Matt Thomas and everyone else involved in the project. I didn’t follow the betas as much as I should so a lot of the 2.5 version is completely new to me.

I’m working on several articles for next week to get back into the swing of things. Getting back from vacation and catching up on work took more effort than I had thought it would. Look for some really great content next week. Also, if you want you can keep up with me on twitter— I’m always active there.

Testing out my blog with a language translator

I recently found a Wordpress plugin that allows for the translation using Google translate (or babelfish) of my entire site. I know that I get quite a bit of traffic from all over the world and so I thought it may help to have a translation available in various languages. I only speak English so it is tough for me to tell how well the translator is working. I think it is a very rough translation but probably gets the point across better then most can translate from English to their native tongue. At any rate my site is now available in Italian, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, and Russian. My web design news will hopefully be better understood in all of these languages.

There should be more coming in the future I’m sure. The Wordpress plugin I have used is called Global Translater by nothing2hide.

Using Faux Columns for same column height

Are you trying to get two or more columns to appear to be the same height with CSS? There is a trick in doing this that is extremely easy and by far the best method. This is a question that I hear quite a bit, because currently CSS by default doesn’t allow you to be able to do this. If you are wanting two columns, say a navigation column and a body copy column, to be the same height you can set them at a fixed height but this isn’t a good idea. Especially if you have a dynamic site, because with a dynamic site it is impossible to tell how much content is going to be where in your site. You definitely don’t want to have to go in and “manually” fix the column height every time the site gets updated. Read more »

Brand new design, let me know what you think!

I have redesigned the web site again, this time I really like the design. I say that statement like all the other times I hated the design when I published them. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if I began every redesign post with that exact same statement. Promising this one is the best.

Don’t worry though, if you don’t like it I will probably change it in 3-6 months anyway.

I really do like this design though, there are a few things that need a little adjustment that I will be working on over the next day or two but it is nearly done and much better then the previous design.

I included the RSS feed button at the top of the web site and at the bottom of all of the posts. So click it and subscribe to my site for more web design news that you’ll love.

What is with all of the pink?!

A lot of sites went pink last year to show their support for breast cancer awareness. This year there are over 500 web sites that have signed up on the Pink for October web site. I’ve obviously joined the crowd and intent on keeping my site pink for all of October to show my support.

If you have a web site you should also. No, really. Go now. Do it.

(update: i fixed the link, apparently I was linking to myself.)

What do you want to know more about?

It can be hard from time to time to come up with ideas for what my readers want to learn about or read about on the site. So, I think it would be nice to hear back from some of you what you want to see on the site. Whether it is as general as having more CSS examples and tutorials or something specific, like getting a certain exploding browser to cooperate.

I can talk about any design topic that you want to know more about or even inform everyone better on what to do and not to do when it comes to SEO.

At any rate, the more specific you are the more likely I will be to write an article about it. Also, if you would prefer note that you would like a poll instead of an open forum. I thought it would be nice to not have restrictions on ideas to really give you, the reader, control over what you read.

*Also, expect a redesign this week. I have a complete revamp coming that is going to blow this crappy design away.
