Adobe releases Apollo public alpha

Adobe has announced their public alpha release of the Apollo runtime environment. This new technology developed by Adobe will allow developers (and designers) to implement cross-platform applications with flash, Dreamweaver, Ajax and other previously online-only tools for offline desktop use. This means that you can develop a web site for users to use offline at their convenience and get updates whenever they connect to the Internet for any changes. For example, if you have a blog that has content that is updated weekly you could have an Apollo application that would get updates for the content anytime the user connects to the Internet so they could have the most recent content available to them to read at their leisure.

This ground breaking technology should reshape the way that XHTML, AJAX, Flash and programming technologies are used. This new idea is platform independent so it doesn’t require designers to learn complex OS specific programming skills to make an application for any operating system.

Companies could easily use this technology to develop a database application that could be given to their out-of-office workers to use and update whenever they have an Internet connection to have all of the updated company information they need.

Adobe has Apollo available for free public alpha on their web site downloadable for Mac or PC and intend to have it available for Linux users in the very near future. I will have an indepth review of the runtime environment in the future but for now try it out yourself from Adobe or read the full press release from Adobe.

Yep, and from there (to my knowledge) they’ve renamed it to AIR. And, I think, it– along with Flex– is going to open up a whole new era in the way the technology sector works. I suspect that it might drive some of the old models away – even when it comes to Operating Systems. The idea of these applications certainly appeals to the Long Tail, and that’s going to change the way business works even further. If you ask me, we’re going to have a very different world of business in five years time, and the software industry will have to change significantly too.

  2. Thanks for sharing this information to us. Do you know any link where I can see a complete list of releases from Adobe? I lost mine and I’ve been searching high and low yet I couldn’t find any.
