Posted on Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 under Uncategorized by Dustin Brewer.I was getting lots of server errors on all of my sites thanks to 1&1 (1and1.com)’s horrible hosting service. The most popular was an 501 Server Error that kept happening. Not sure what was causing it but it was definitely causing my site to be unreachable. I sent them an email and it took them 7 hours to respond to my sites being down and they wanted to know what sites were affected even though I told them that it was affecting all of my sites and linked to the most important site in the email. Great customer service, right?
1&1 has awful service
Normally I could overlook something like this but it has been common for my site to simply go down and there is no notification from them or urgency in getting the site back up or even responding to my emails about it. I’m sure the sites went down more than I knew about. At any rate I would recommend anyone that is looking for cheap hosting to avoid 1&1 as it is awful and their customer service is even worse.
I’m working on migrating everything over so there will be a couple of things here and there that may not be working on the site as I complete the transition process. I should also have the new site up before too long.
So, lesson learned. Do not use 1&1 for hosting. Let me repeat, Don’t use 1and1 for hosting. They have horrible service.

Absolutly right ! I left the french departement of one and one two month ago for exactly the sames raisons. Exepte that i waited 1 week for mails answers
So, where did you go? I’m using 1and1 and, for the last 3-4 months, if my site is available, I can’t seem to edit much in Wordpress. Just a bunch of 500 errors. And no real response other then “we’re aware of the issue on your specific server and are working to fix it.” and then, within 2 hours, “it’s fixed.” even though… it isn’t fixed at all.
That reminds me, I’m still paying 1 & 1 for hosting! I had to get my uncle to migrate me last year, because 1 & 1 didn’t provide any help when I tried doing it. Even a crucial link for part of the migration process was wrong, it took ages for me to figure out the right link.
Now using Nativespace. I feel safe with them.
I am in business for a long time and the worst I have ever experienced is 1&1. They do sales like nobody else but have the worst service and price model. In order to have good speeds with database driven cms sites you have to re-install the database so you probably catch a new database server.
I’ve used them for a couple years with no trouble. Sorry to hear about your poor experience with them.
We bear with them for our sites as there is no other company that can offer so many features at such a low price. We recently had a server outtage, though, that took all of our sites down with it. When we contacted tech support they insisted that our first course of action should be to “reboot Windows”.
Dustin, could you perhaps share the name of your current host?
Reason asking is that I plan going freelance also, and would like to get one reliable host for all my clients that require hosting as part of the service.
For what it matter, clients will be globally, including me, staying a few months here, then a few months there. (Crazy but perfect!)

1&1 is a full PIA in sooo many ways. You can find ways around the issues on business pro and other packages above. I have even been able to make what I want to work work
(something are a no hope on business package though)

for hosting mediatemple have always beenpretty solid (gs have issues but is still worth considering) I have heard many grand claims about slice host too (though not for everyone)
I follow your posts for quite a long time and must tell you that your articles are always valuable to readers.

I had the same issues 500 with word press constantly. I moved to Premium Hosts 24. Really cheap and better quality service. I recommend them.
Everything about 1 & 1 is really dire. The fact that they state they offer support is laughable
They are ansolutely awfull, I had to cancel their service and 2 months later they charge my credit card!!! Calling them didn’t help as they just don’t answer the phone, changing card information doesn’t help either. I feel like I was being mugged and the worst thing I don’t know how to stop that! And as I understand they even very eager to use a collection agency. I hate them!!!

I have tried to add a feedback form to my website, but unfortunately, 1and1 has the worst faq service and everything they respond is too simple, too confusing.
I do not know what to do with that hosting service, I think I’m getting crazy trying to make php or CGI formw work. The CGI forms that they offer as free applications are just a piece of beginners work.
I used to create my forms from scratch but found a new solution that saves me a hell of a lot of time.
